However, in advance the actors had to perform the play before a censorship committee, and some scenes had to be changed and adapted to the Iranian code of conduct in the public area. In this presentation, which was created by Wunderbaum for the IABR, the actors relate about their experiences in Teheran. They talk about what it is like to perform on a public square in a country that has a very repressive regime.
In addition, the actors read testimonies that have been compiled by the Iranian colleague-artists and friends that they came to know over there. Their stories are about their everyday artistic practice, and how they have to hide this. In Iran it is perilous to show fantasies and wishes that deviate from what religion and politics allow. In contrast to our Western interest in the function of art in public spaces, these Iranian artists are trapped in a system of fear and secrecy. How do they manage to organize their artistic practice? Where and how can they organize rock concerts? What does this underground scene look like, and what role does the evolution of modern urbanization play in all this?
