Unsettled statement
Wunderbaum is a group of actors that work collectively, together with a designer, a dramaturge, musicians, writers, photographers and film producers.
Our work is inspired by the energy that is released between our personalities and the outer world. Our way of working is chameleonic; it can take on many shapes. Our performances are always the result of newly discovered theatre forms combined with new interests in humankind or social themes. That’s why we love to play on location. There, the friction with reality is the sharpest. We also perform in main auditoria. When doing so, we try to secure a heightened reality in the theatre.
How can various interests come into their own in a society? Group interests or individual interests, interests that might be public or strictly personal. Interests that continuously have to be defended, questioned, disputed, negotiated.
We feel strongly connected with the environment in which we work. We are fascinated by the strategies that people and groups use to cope with life. Our performances contain references to topical political matters, but also and more importantly, to social mechanisms that show how negotiations take place about various, often conflicting interests.
Through our acting, we try to shed light on the ways these constant negotiations evolve. We try to visualize the thinking of characters that play a part in the shaping of a community. We do this for you, our audience, but just as well for ourselves. On a successful theatre night, the feeling emerges that we are joint witnesses of a social dynamic that relinquishes some of its secrets.
For us, acting is a combination of emotional expression and social interaction. Text is important in our play, but we also like to make use of other instruments such as guitar amplifiers, dance movements, stroboscopes, video beamers, wooden floors and drum sets.
We examine books, films, documentaries, streets, countries and people. During the day and at night and in the extraordinary moments in between.
(Un)invited we appear before you. On location in the actual reality or in the non-reality of the theatre.
In using your and our extreme interference, we think (over) the world.
